Juggling Quilting Projects Chaos from Podunk Pretties

The weather in Podunk has been absolutely beautiful the last couple of days.  Sunny and 70 is perfect for opening the windows and doing a little spring cleaning.  And that's exactly what I did for a couple of days. Then I was ready to get back in the Studio and play with some fun spring projects.

As you can see above the Delightful Daisies quilt binding is almost finished.  All that is left to do is hand stitch it to the back of the quilt.  Getting to this point was not easy due to juggling multiple projects and every ...

Quilting, Sorting and Ignoring from Podunk Pretties

A lot of quilty goodness is happening out here in Podunk.  The Delightful Daisy quilt is looking pretty cute.  I can't wait to get this girl off the frame and on display.  By my unreliable calculations it should be ready to share here on the blog by next Monday or Tuesday.  I'll blame the quilting design for my slow progress because the quilting is 99% ruler work.  The only free motion quilting is the stems and leaves of the large daisies.

But let's be honest, this quilt shouldn't even be in the rotation. Remember me setting ...

WIP's Wednesday from Podunk Pretties

Hi Friends!  Yesterday while using my sewing machine to fill the bobbins for my quilter, I realized I had not shared the progress of my Old Town Mystery quilt blocks.

The plan is to finish piecing this quilt top as soon as the Bow-Tie quilt is finished.

Piecing these blocks a slow process due to the petting and admiring each block and the many different background fabrics.

As you all know I like scrappy quilts, but most of the time I use a consistent background fabric...white.

The low volume adds so much interest to the quilt but doesn't ...

Fabric Discipline from Podunk Pretties

Slow progress is being made on my version of the Old Town Mystery quilt by Bonnie Hunter.

When I say my version, it means I've made some changes.  First change was the colors.

It needed to be changed to a more usable color pallet. I liked her colors, but would I really use the quilt?

The second change is the sashing.  When I participate in Bonnies yearly mystery, I always draw up her quilt in EQ after the big reveal.  Doing this lets me see how the color changes will look.  This one is cute, but I feel like ...

Old Town Mystery Quilt Assembly from Podunk Pretties

It's been a couple of weeks since the reveal of the Old Town Mystery by Bonnie Hunter.  All of my clues for this quilt have been ready and waiting patiently for me to pay them a little attention. I'm loving this quilt block design and my color combination.

As you can see, I didn't get much accomplished, just the one quilt block.  But I did manage to get all the blocks laid out on the design boards.  I can now project jump from quilting the Bow-Tie quilt on the frame and piecing the Old Town Mystery.

The ...

Oh, The Weather Outside Is Frightful.... from Podunk Pretties

There's a big winter storm headed our way later today.  Up to 10 inches of the beautiful snowman making snow!  I can hardly wait to bundle up, go outside and play in the snow.  While I wait, there's plenty to keep me busy inside.  Today I'll finish up the sashing units for the Old Town Quilt Mystery by Bonnie Hunter.  If you too are making this quilt, you're probably wondering about my sashing units.  Well, I altered the pattern a bit to suit my style by adding the blue corner triangles.

The change was easy since ...

Old Town Mystery Revealed from Podunk Pretties

Yesterday's Old Town Reveal was exciting and I'm glad it's over.  Participating in a mystery quilt along is a real challenge for me.  I'm a control freak when it comes to quilting but over the years I learned to trust Bonnie.   Now that I've seen the quilt design I can relax and enjoy assembling the quilt.  I didn't have any sewing time yesterday, but I did find the time arrange one block on a design board.

Before tackling the quilt assembly, I thought it would be a good idea to trim the 341 half ...

Old Town Mystery Quilt ~ Part 8 from Podunk Pretties

What a great way to end the year and ring in the new!  Early Tuesday morning while still in my jammies and drinking coffee, Bonnie surprised us with Part 8 of the Old Town Mystery Quilt.  Woohoo!  I made Mr. Podunk's breakfast. Then did some chores and by noonish I was still in my jammies and cutting the fabrics for part 8.

Bonnie gave several options for making the flying geese blocks.  I chose to use Bonnie's Essential Triangle ruler since I would be cutting from smaller pieces of scrap fabrics.

Old Town Mystery ~ Part 7 ~ Finished from Podunk Pretties

Hi Friends!  I did it.  I finished these itty-bitty units!  Let me tell you, they gave me trouble right from the start.  If it could go wrong, it did.  Miscuts, miscounting, wrong seam allowance and pressing in the wrong direction.  But I kept my cool, worked through the many issues and here we are with a pretty stack of what looks to be perfect units ready for the next clue in this mystery quilt.

I'm not one of those quilters that will take apart blocks if the seams were pressed in the wrong direction.  Pressing the seams in the ...

Old Town Quiltville Mystery ~ Part 7 from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilty Friends!  This week's Old Town Mystery clue is teeny tiny little flying geese blocks.  Aren't they adorable?

With the flying geese block being so small, I thought for sure I would be able to use the aqua scraps produced in clue 5 to make this week's clue.  Nope!  They were a smidgen too small.

So once again, a gazillion triangles were cut from strips of fabric using the Bonnie Hunter Essential Triangle ruler.   The impatient quilter in me dislikes how long it takes to cut all the pieces.  But I like being able to ...

Old Town Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt ~ Part 6 from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilty Friends!  Bonnie hit us with an extra clue this week.  The clue was sets of matching half square triangles (HST's).  After completing the HST's on Christmas morning, it was time to have a little fun and stage all the clues in my Christmas train.

I was like a child with a new toy.  Santa was ready to leave the station as his Foxy conductor shouted
"All Aboard to Quiltville"

If you're not familiar with Bonnie, her blog is called Quiltville.  The FREE Old Town Mystery Quilt tab can be found near the top of her ...

Old Town Mystery Quilt ~ Part 5 Finished from Podunk Pretties

Hey Quilty Friends!  Old Town Part 5 was a breeze compared to some of the previous clues. I finished these much faster than I thought.  But in my excitement, I forgot one of Bonnies rules, no pictures on our cutting mats.  So, once again I blurred out the cutting mat lines in some of the pictures.

Bonnie's patterns almost always give the maker several options for making the different units.  My plan for this quilt was to use the Bonnie Hunter Essential Triangle ruler if it was a suggested option.  As you can see, I changed my mind.  The ...

Old Town Part 4 ~ Finished! from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilting Friends!  Come on in and join me in a little celebratory finishing dance!  Had it not been for all your well wishes and prayers for speedy wrist healing, I don't think I would have been able to accomplish these half square triangles this week. It means the world to me to have such a great community, thank you!

They still need the dog ears trimmed off but as far as I'm concerned, they are done.  The trimming should only take about 30 minutes, give or take.

Working a little at a time and taking rest breaks ...

Little by Little ~ Old Town Mystery Part 4 from Podunk Pretties

Hi Quilty Friends!  Today's quilting update is small, but there's still progress. The fabric for part four of the Old Town Mystery quilt is finally ready for cutting. My scrap bins lacked pieces large enough for the necessary matching sets, so I resorted to cutting some strips from my yardage stash. Naturally, most of these strips came from my cherished Lakehouse Drygoods collection, which always sets my heart aflutter.

I managed to cut four matching sets of half square triangles with Bonnie's Essential Triangle ruler, which was the most my injured wrist and hand could handle. A ...

Old Town Mystery Quilt~ Clue 3 Finished from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilty Friends!  Having a sprained wrist made piecing this small batch of quarter square triangles a bit of a challenge. It took about 8 hours of sewing for a bit and resting for a longer bit.

Typically, I prefer to oversize quarter square triangles (QSTs) and trim them to perfection. However, for these, I pieced them together carefully and slowly, ensuring that only the dog ears required trimming. I was able to trim them using my right hand and a pair of scissors. I must admit, I was quite pleased with the precision of my sewing when it was ...

Pretty In Purple? from Podunk Pretties

Well, isn't this pretty?  PURPLE!  Y'all know how much I dislike purple...HAHA!  I definitely don't look good in purple.

It may seem bad, but I bet I'll be fit as a fiddle in no time. Bet you're itching to know the scoop – well, I took a tumble over my furry sidekick during our daily stroll. Good news is, my knees played the hero, cushioning the fall for my hands and wrists. Bad news? My wrist wasn't quite the superhero needed to save my face from kissing the road.

Fortunately, I had already cut ...

Old Town Quiltville Mystery `~ Part 2 from Podunk Pretties

Hey Quilty Friends!  This past weekend every spare minute was spent working on the second clue of the Quiltville Mystery quilt called Old Town.

It took me a bit longer than some to make these units because I chose not to follow the cutting and piecing instructions.  She suggested cutting and sewing strips of fabric, then subcutting into units.

Strip piecing and cutting makes things faster but I don't really care for the results.  Often there will be large pieces of sewn strips leftover, the strips sets are harder to press accurately, and the top reason is I had ...

Quiltville Old Town Mystery ~ Clue One from Podunk Pretties

Hello Scrap Happy Quilters!  I did it!  The first clue of the Old Town Quiltville Mystery is finished.

I started cutting fabrics late afternoon on Monday using Bonnie's ruler that I bought a couple of weeks ago. One set of test blocks shown below. Normally when making flying geese I use the four at a time method which requires larger pieces of fabric.  Using this ruler and sewing small pieces reminded me of my earlier years in quilting before discovering the rotary cutter, acrylic templates, rulers and quick piecing techniques.  One of these days I'll time Bonnie's ...
